CEED & 22 Climate Organizations Send Letter to House Committee on Energy and Commerce
On September 16th, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman Gary Palmer (AL-06), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Environment, held a hearing titled From Gridlock to Growth: Permitting Reform Under the Clean Air Act.The suite of bills being discussed at the hearing make amendments to the Clean Air Act and strip away community protections.
Air pollution is not an abstract issue. It directly harms people in communities across the country. Elevated levels of soot and smog are linked to asthma attacks, heart and lung disease, developmental harms in children, and premature deaths. Weakening the Clean Air Act would worsen these public health risks, increasing hospital visits and health care costs while cutting short thousands of American lives each year. In response, the EJNCP and partner organizations created and signed on to a letter expressing concern over the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment’s misguided focus on air pollution permitting reform that will increase harmful air pollution.
