What We Do
Through planning, research, and community education, CEED works to create just, climate and energy policy – so that all members of society may effectively participate in public decision-making.

Policy Advocacy
CEED provides research and capacity building so that communities can make informed decisions about policies and programs affecting their environmental conditions on the local and federal level. CEED partners with communities to achieve long lasting revitalization of social, economic and environmental conditions in the community. Our work tackles complex intersections of energy affordability, sustainable community development, environmental health, and community engagement.
Pollution Free Energy Systems
As the first major regulation on greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, how the Clean Power Plan addresses Justice and Equity is critical.
Community Planning
Green Zones prioritize community voices to define and plan their own future to transform neighborhoods from hot spots of pollution into healthy places to live, work and play.
Climate Change &
Health Equity
CEED supports advocacy efforts at the local and federal level to ensure that Indigenous, low income, and communities of color, have access to safe and healthy spaces.
Climate, Energy & Health Research
CEED ensures energy policy solutions to climate change are equitable and sustainable. We work in partnership with grassroots communities, policy makers and researchers, combining technical research with a priority for understanding policy impacts on justice communities. As public dialogue about climate change becomes more and more “expert driven,” CEED is committed to providing resources and space for inclusionary and informed public participation and self-governance. We work to highlight alternative energy infrastructures that support long term sustainability and community control.

Climate Resiliency
Climate planning should ensure that EJ communities will not be additionally over-burdened by climate change-related impacts.
Energy Vulnerability
Green Zones prioritize community voices to define and plan their own future to transform neighborhoods from hot spots of pollution into healthy places to live, work and play.

Popular Education
CEED conducts popular education within grassroots communities to build their capacity to engage in their own voice on critical energy, climate and environmental policies and planning that affect their health and livelihoods. Our popular education program is rooted in connecting class, race and social transformation to issues of climate, energy and the environment.
We recognize that all communities and peoples have their own unique cultures and lived experiences. Our popular education materials are designed to initiate conversation, acknowledge community knowledge, and develop collective and informed community action.
Building Leadership
CEED is committed to building leadership in communities of color, indigenous communities, and low-income communities through our intern program, community-led advocacy projects, and more like the Twin Cities Energy Efficiency Cohort and the Youth in Environmental Learning and Leadership (YELL!) program.
Community Education Curriculum
Our hands-on, interactive workshops and educational materials were developed in collaboration with community partners over the years. CEED’s Popular Education curriculum can be downloaded and used by community members and educators independently, or if requested, with CEED staff facilitating.
