ARCHIVE: Twin Cities EJ Story Maps

Overview

Numerous research studies have documented the disproportionate impacts of pollution on the health, cultures and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples, low income and communities of color. The issues around multiple pollution sources (“cumulative pollution”) and how to start framing the narrative is a key part of what the Twin Cities EJ Story Maps start to relay. Click on each of the Tabs to explore what story the data tells around the location of Highways and Railways, Blighted Housing, Land Use, Energy Vulnerability and Minneapolis Air Quality testing. By comparing these to socioeconomic (race/class/age) data layer tabs, it begins to demonstrate the disproportionate impact experienced by low income and communities of color. They also begin to paint the picture of underlying “pre-existing conditions” communities are facing, that work to make them more vulnerable to climate change.

To go deeper from the storyboard into your own community in Twin Cities, visit the Twin Cities EJ Mapping Tool to enter an address of concern, look at overlapping layers of pollution directly, or learn more about disparate access to environmental pollution and amenities (such as parks, green spaces, etc).
