Working with Glendale Residents for Housing based on Health, Community Vision and Resiliency

By CEED, Jul 22, 2015

Glendale Townhomes, located in southeast Minneapolis, is one of the last remaining public housing town homes in the country. Residents have been organizing around the proposed sale and privatization of the town homes for over a year, that would result in displacement and destabilization of this 13 acre area that largely serves refugee, low income and families of color. CEED has been working with the residents to hear their stories and pull together the policy research that supported their community knowledge and proposed strategies (see the fact sheet CEED provided research support for here). In July, the residents were successful in stopping the project, with the City Council determining that no proposal could move forward by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, until it was supported by the neighborhood residents. CEED sees Glendale as a core environmental justice issue that centers around the Question of who benefits from sustainable development in Minneapolis and who bares the burden? We are now continuing our work with residents to develop alternatives for the housing project that utilizes energy efficiency, renewables, and green space planning and financing that fits with the vision of keeping it a public asset and a resilient, place-based community.
