Public Buildings

By CEED, Dec 7, 2015

Community use sties are identified as those that have important community-wide social, economic and potential emergency utilization functions. Community resiliency across the U.S. depends on viable social spaces that enable community members to access for a variety of planning and service provision.

We have identified sites/buildings that have these combination of uses within the B3 data. The goal is to identify targeted areas which are in need of support and resources to build an energy efficient infrastructure – with the goal of enhancing community resiliency. This includes social, economic and environmental factors.

More children—nearly 6.5 million— attend schools in rural areas and small towns than in the 20 largest urban school districts combined. In Minnesota there is a great need for equitable funding for facility maintenance

The 25 largest school districts in the state, encompassing 400,000 students, spend $2.79 per square foot on facility maintenance while the other 305 Minnesota school districts and their 400,000 students spend $0.58 on facility maintenance, one-fifth the amount.

Approximately 27% of the nation’s students are rural students, but 42% of the nation’s schools are rural. The average school size for rural schools is 392 students.

In comparison, urban and suburban schools on average have 664 students, which means that rural schools are about 40% smaller than the average urban or suburban schools. A rural community tends to revolve around its school. For example, often town meetings and other community events occur in the school and the library often serves as the community library.
